The Rugby Football Union has announced the cancellation of all domestic competitions below Championship in Men’s Competition and Premier 15s for women for the 2020/21 season.
The decision follows after the extension of the government guidelines following the pandemic coronavirus which saw the sport suspended since March.
Even though international competitions, Premiership and Premier 15s have resumed, full contact club rugby has not been allowed for level three and four in men’s competitions and as a result the England board have decided to cancel the competitions as they feel scheduling a complete season in the limited time would not be possible.
According to reports, the men’s Championship is set to kick-start in January.
“We believe that, even if a return to full contact rugby becomes possible,?playing a meaningful competitive league season resulting in promotion and relegation is no longer feasible,” read the statement from RFU.
“The decision has been made now so we can provide clubs with some certainty for the remainder of the season.”
Sports Minister Nigel Huddleston expressed regret over the decision but is hopeful of the sport bouncing back following a difficult time.
“I know that today’s decision from the RFU will be disappointing to players and fans across the country however protecting people’s health is absolutely paramount.
“The government is continuing to work closely with the RFU on ways in which we can bring the competitive, community game back in some form ahead of a return to full contact as soon as the public health situation allows.”
